Bold, WayCoolJr, and I
decided to have a 1vs1 mini-tournament about a week ago, and
there was some great action. The best game, in my opinion,
happened after Bold had beaten me. It started off with
Bold and WCJ randoming and starting at opposing positions:
WCJ at 9, and Bold at 3. Scouting was done by both
parties, but Bold took the first initiative.
He brought 6 vultures up to WCJ's ramp, and attempted to lure the protector
zealots from their position. WCJ didn't have hold position
on, because they followed shortly, but his micro stopped the
vultures from entering his base.
| |
Realizing that he wasn't getting in with his
vultures, Bold decided to contain WCJ witn a few spider mines,
and he also began to build an EBay. If WCJ doesn't do
something soon, he will have a huge tank push in his wake.
| |
WCJ
kept climbing up the tech tree, and Bold kept course with his
containment plans. By this time, WayCoolJr had observers,
and was researching storm. What was Bold doing?
Well
Bold appeared to be just about ready to go with his tank push
and WCJ was still teching. Ever since the vulture assault,
WCJ hasn't been outside of his base and he has no idea as to
what is in store.
The
tank push is on and slowly WCJ's zealots begin to die.
Some strays run out only to be blasted before even making it to
the tanks. It doesn't look too good for WCJ.
I must say that
WCJ did several things that impressed me. He spotted the
mines with an observer, and sent out probes to kill them.
Since probes hover, they don't trigger the mines! Pretty
neat, but not too necessary when you have 8 tanks sieging
you. What was he planning to do? Bold began moving
up the ramp, and was doing some serious damage.
Well well well. That explains it :). WCJ
had around 8 DT's, and was doing damage to the tanks that weren't
protected by turrets! He killed around 3 goliaths, and 3 tanks
before being comsatted, and killed.
WCJ
was doing everything in his power to stop the push on his main, but
all he could do was delay it. And did he ever. He killed
alot more units than I thought he would with well placed storms, and
DT's. It was around this time that WCJ decided to Abandon.
He started an expansion at 6, and began rebuilding like a mad
man, only to be discovered about a minute
later. His new main was attacked by small forces, since his
old one was still large. Bold dismissed the importance of this
base, and kept up the push on the abandoned base. WCJ teched.
He
teched to a strong protoss air fleet consisting of 5 carriers, and 4
scouts. With Bold having just expanded a little ago, Bold's
natural seemed like a good last ditch effort for WayCoolJr. He
sent his ships over, and hoped for the best.
I did say that WCJ did a few things that impressed
me, so here's another:
As he attacked Bold's natural, Bold tried to take
down the carriers with cloaked wraiths. When he did, he
noticed that he was being attacked so he doubled back, scanned the
carriers and went in. When he saw that he was still being
attacked he scanned again, but didn't see an observer! Tricky
stuff there, WCJ.
Most of Bold's wraiths were destroyed, and so far WCJ's first
offensive was successful. It didn't last long though, because
Bold had alot of goliaths, and still had some air. WCJ took his
remaining carriers, and went back to his base.
After the attack, Bold sent over an incedibly strong force to WCJ
and began a push on his base! Bold's army, consisting of valks,
wraiths, tanks, goliaths, marines & medics, killed the choke by
the ramp and proceeded onward despite losing alot of units. He
got his troops past the ramp, but WCJ kept him at bay with scouts,
carriers, and zealots. He kept them recharged, and Bold's
offensive was foiled. Both parties took a little time to
regroup, and Bold took some time to take another expansion. He
had already destroyed WCJ's main base, and now he wanted to out expand
him. WCJ had each expansion scouted regularly, and he noticed
that Bold was trying to expand to the lower island. He took
his huge fleet of carriers and scouts over, and decimated the
fledgling expansion.
Coming
off of an ego-boosting offensive, WayCoolJr rallied up to Bold's
natural. He killed all structures, all scvs, and severely
injured Bold's struggling economy.
Bold wasn't beaten. He brought down 10
goliaths, 5 wraiths, a few valks and 6 BC's. This was an
amazing battle that lasted several minutes and required each side to
send reinforcements a few times.
It
finally ended with Bold killing all but a carrier, a few scouts and
some observers - They hurried back to WCJ's main base. Bold
was now in dire need of minerals, and his attempts to make
additional expansions were being thwarted repeatedly.
The game was ended as WCJ furiously pumped out more
carriers and took down Bold's last mineral producing expansion.
GG's were exchanged and the game reached it's conclusion.
I mentioned that I was impressed with several things done by
WCJ. I mentioned the probes hitting the mines, the observer placed off to
the side - and I will mention one more thing WCJ did which impressed me:
He won. |
