Sometimes you can see your own demise coming.  Whether it be intuition, or scouting, if you see a force coming for you that is greater than you can handle - You should abandon.

What I mean by abandon is this: Get a peon out and start an expansion far from your original base, and focus on your new base.  If you already have an expansion, and there is no way to survive, then put all your concentration on your expansion.

"What the hell is this strategy about?"

It's about survival, and it's about buying time.  If you have any chance of winning it is dependant upon getting back where you were as soon as possible and how else can you do that without having a few minutes without being attacked!   By totally abandoning your original base when you know you will be obliterated, you have time to rebuild.  The opponent won't scout until your base is or is close to being dead, and hopefully you will have rebuilt your base - if not, you have done all you can.  You can't live by this strategy, but when you know you're on your way out - it's all you can do.
